Immersion requires that the user accept an artificial world as his reality in which the technology making this possible dissolves into the background under ideal circumstances. The interface between person and machine vanishes if the observer has the feeling of experiencing the scenery from his perspective, imaginative and staging space blend.
The degree of immersion can also be a form of quality standard for virtual surroundings. Immersion criteria are the range of senses addressed or the immersion selection, the degree of sensory response, the type of stimuli, (liveliness, authenticity) and the degree of interaction (real-time, performance).
The immersion concept claims that an observer submerges himself in a virtual world and accepts this artificial world as his reality.
A simulation has to address a number senses simultaneously in order to contain an accentuated reality. During perception, a parallel consistency test is always underway, meaning that the perceiving person is constantly analyzing whether the attempt to unite different sensory perceptions in one harmonic whole is successful.
"Total immersion includes the necessity that all ties to the real world be excluded and replacement stimuli be offered, and that the user be convinced that everything is real." (Casey Larijany)
